Preventing Teeth Stains
Thursday, January 26th, 2012
Stained or discolored teeth are one of the most common complaints people have about their smile, and a major reason why teeth whitening remains the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatment performed every year.
Teeth can be stained by several different substances, including coffee, tea, wine, and nicotine. Professional teeth whitening – such as the BriteSmile® and Rembrandt® in-office treatments we provide – can eliminate the vast majority of these teeth stains, but there is always the chance that stains can return in the future. To prevent this from happening, you can take a few different steps:
- Floss – The plaque that accumulates between your teeth and at your gum line is like a magnet for teeth stains. Regular flossing will help you fight these stains.
- Quit smoking – This may be easier said than done, but nicotine can cause a lot of damage to an otherwise beautiful smile.
- Use a straw when possible – Drinking cola, iced tea, and darker fruit juices through a straw will reduce the amount of exposure your teeth have to these staining beverages.
- Don’t sip coffee too long – Finishing your coffee in one or two sittings is far less detrimental to your teeth than sipping it throughout the day. If you can, brush your teeth after drinking coffee.
If you have further questions about teeth stains, please contact our experienced Bergen County teeth whitening team at Dumont Cosmetic Dental today. Dr. Howard Perlmutter serves patients throughout the Dumont, Bergenfield, Paramus, and Haworth areas of New Jersey.

What is BriteSmile®?
Friday, July 29th, 2011
According to a study conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 74 percent of adults feel that an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success; 99.7 percent of adults believe that a smile is an important social asset.
Fortunately, there are a number of teeth-whitening options available to treat discolored teeth. BriteSmile is one such product, a professionally applied teeth-whitening system that uses a hydrogen peroxide agent and blue light to activate the bleaching. In just one visit, you will leave with noticeably whiter teeth and a naturally brilliant smile.
How Does BriteSmile work?
During your BriteSmile session at Dumont Cosmetic, you will get to sit back and relax while experienced New Jersey cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter whitens your teeth with this simple process:
- The BriteSmile whitening gel is applied to your teeth
- The patented BriteSmile® light is positioned over your teeth in 20-minute increments to activate the gel and start the whitening process
- This process is repeated twice more before your go home with your new smile
Maintaining Your New Smile
The same habits that first discolored your teeth can still affect them after teeth whitening. To enjoy your new white teeth long after your appointment, it is recommended that you employ the following practices:
- Avoid dark-colored foods and beverages for at least 48 hours after your BriteSmile treatment
- Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at least twice every day or after each meal and floss daily
- Use your BriteSmile Whitening Toothpaste and BriteSmile Sonicare toothbrush
- Visit your dentist for your regular cleaning and check-ups, approximately every six months
If you live in the Dumont, Bergenfield, Paramus or Haworth, New Jersey, areas and would like to learn more about your teeth-whitening options, please contact New Jersey cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter at Dumont Cosmetic Dental to schedule a consultation.

Sensitive Teeth and Tooth Whitening
Friday, June 17th, 2011
Teeth sensitivity can be due to a variety of conditions, but it is of special concern to those considering teeth whitening treatment. Because many over-the-counter teeth-whitening products can cause sensitivity, those already suffering from sensitive teeth may be hesitant to try professional teeth whitening in order to achieve the vibrant smile they desire.
Thankfully, there are a number of options to help those with sensitive teeth obtain a beautiful smile. At Dumont Cosmetic Dental, we offer a wide variety of teeth-whitening options that can help you achieve a brighter smile with minimal discomfort.
Because most teeth-whitening agents contain the bleaching agent hydrogen peroxide, sensitivity is a possibility with any teeth-whitening product. But a teeth-whitening session with a dental professional can achieve greater and more immediate results than over-the-counter whitening products while limiting the impact to sensitive teeth.
Professional, in-office whitening treatments limit the amount of time the bleaching agent is on your teeth and reduces the discomfort you may feel. Such procedures often take less than one hour, as opposed to the weeks or months of daily use required by most at-home teeth-whitening products.
In addition, Dumont, New Jersey, cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter knows how to properly and cleanly apply teeth-whitening solution, avoiding contact with the sensitive areas of your mouth and preventing the uneven application of whitening gel that can occur with most over-the-counter whitening products.
Although professional teeth whitening can limit the impact to sensitive teeth, teeth whitening is not a solution for everyone with discolored teeth. Those with advanced tooth decay or gum disease may need to address those conditions before scheduling a teeth-whitening treatment.
If you live in the Dumont, Bergenfield, Paramus or Haworth, New Jersey, areas and would like to learn more about teeth whitening, please contact New Jersey cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter at Dumont Cosmetic Dental to schedule a consultation.

How to Keep Your Newly Whitened Teeth
Thursday, May 12th, 2011
If you’re happy with the results of your teeth whitening procedure at Dumont Cosmetic Dental, you may be wishing that you could keep the results forever. Although we can’t guarantee permanent whitening results, there are many things you can do to ensure your teeth remain as white as possible for years to come.
- Cut down on staining foods and beverages such as coffee, black tea, red wine, and chocolate
- Quit smoking
- Remember to brush your teeth after every meal
- Make regular dental appointments
All these will contribute to keeping your whitened teeth as bright as they were after your teeth whitening appointment.
However, the best thing you can do to keep your teeth as white as possible is to use our take-home whitening system. Wearing the whitening trays while you sleep for as little as one night a week can keep your teeth white and attractive.
To learn more about your teeth whitening options in Dumont, New Jersey, please call or email us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Howard Perlmutter.
